XI–XV · The record
The descent beneath the first account.
Even a Claim upheld at Determination may still go under.
A Claim upheld at Determination may be said to stand. It may have withstood Reply, Evidence and Examination. It can even be pursued through its consequences. None of this means that it has yet been understood.
UNDER is the descent beneath the first account of things.
Here the Claim comes under law, positions are inverted, forms die, opposites are held together and attachments become visible. What seemed settled above ground may look very different underneath it.
Descent is not failure. It is part of the examination.
- XI Justice · Under Law
- Descent encounters law: the grounds on which a Claim has been upheld and the consequences that follow from it.
- XII The Hanged Man · Negation
- The position from which we judged is suspended. Inversion makes room for an account that could not be heard from above.
- XIII Death · Descent
- A familiar form comes to an end. What we carry beneath the surface may not return in the form in which it entered.
- XIV Temperance · Equilibrium
- What has been separated is brought into relation again. Opposites are held together; a different balance becomes possible.
- XV The Devil · Restraint
- The descent exposes attachment: what binds the claim, what holds the claimant, and what we may be unwilling to release.
The purpose of descent is not to remain below. It is to see differently when we return.
